Essential Oils Now Used In Mainstream Medicine

Mark Johnson FORT WORTH (CBS 11 News): The healing powers of essential oils have been known for centuries.  Now a Fort Worth hospital is the first in North Texas to take those powers to a clinical level. Megan Morrison's high risk pregnancy has kept her on bed rest for the past six weeks.  Her clinical aromatherapy sessions at Harris Methodist Hospital are new.

"I can definitely tell a big difference," Morrison said. "I'm definitely much more relaxed than if I was just to go take a hot bath."

Nurse Susan Shields is trained in clinical aromatherapy.  It's centuries-old tradition which uses pure essential oils. Harris Methodist has the only certified program in North Texas.

She said, "What we're using is a combination of bergamot, [and] citrus vergania, which is the true lavender--the relaxing lavender.  It does not replace any of the medical treatment that goes on here.  It is in addition to; it is complimentary; it enhances."

Shields says there's a big difference between the oils used at Harris and those you can buy at a department store.  "We can predict what the effect is going to be because we know the chemical composition of the essential oils," she said.  "We know how to most effectively use them for the clinical effects that we're looking for."

In Morrison's case, the goal is to relieve tension and anxiety.  Does it work?  She's convinced.  "It gives me something to look forward to in the day and just helps relax me," she said.

Professor's Study Finds That Peppermint and Cinnamon Lower Frustration and Increase Alertness in Drivers

The scent of peppermint or cinnamon in your car might make your morning commute less frustrating and you more alert when behind the wheel. That's according to the results of a recent study led by Dr. Bryan Raudenbush, an associate professor of psychology at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, WV. According to the study, drivers demonstrated decreased levels of frustration, anxiety and fatigue when exposed to peppermint and cinnamon scents. The study also revealed that drivers were more alert. ESSENTIAL OILS

The Perfect Match For healing

by Jim Lynn

Healing! ...What a powerful, captivating word. It has a kind of magic quality all its own. And for good reason, what with so much pain and suffering in the world today. People want (NEED) healing more than anything else in their lives.

Healing is why essential oils are so captivating. In fact, The two have gone hand-in-glove together throughout history. Known as healing oil, golden oil, precious oil, or anointing oil, essential oils are mankind's earliest known medicine. That Holy Scripture admonishes us to use them as "medicine," makes them all the more compelling...(Ezekiel 47:12, James 5:14).

But why essential oils? What is it that sets them apart from other forms of "medicine"? Why are we surprised to be learning about them now? And why does the human body respond so favorably to them, perhaps unlike any other known substance?

A Natural Healing System...

From both a sectarian and spiritual viewpoint, there is balance and order displayed throughout the universe. Wherever disorder occurs, when some element of nature is forced off balance, a natural system is at work to restore balance and order. This holds true even in death. To the atheist, death means a renewal of matter. To people of spiritual faith, death signals the "ultimate healing" as the soul returns to God (Ecclesiastes 12:7).

In terms of health, our bodies are said to be "in balance" or in a state called "homeostasis" when healthy, and out-of-balance or "imbalanced" when diseased. But the break-down of homeostasis from balance to imbalance, from health to sickness, doesn't just happen, it is a "process" that may take years to develop. And all during this time, the body is working to fight off it's attackers, repair itself and works to re-establish balance. And so, there are degrees of wellness and disease.

The human body is a marvel to behold. It is equipped with a natural healing system that is capable of defending against and defeating any micro-organism that invades it, while working to restore any damage caused by the invader. We have organs that work collectively to protect us called an "immune system." But actually, the body's healing system involves much more than specific organs, tissues and cells. The healing system itself involves every aspect of our being, from DNA up to and including the interaction of our mind.

Our healing system is constantly at work, so much so we normally take our health for granted. But once our healing system becomes "compromised," once it begins to suffer from lack of care (i.e. mal-nourishment, injury, mental state)...pathogens areincreasingly unchallenged to take-up residency within the body.

Once a virus or bacterium gets a stronghold within the body, it is referred to as "chronic." But the chronic condition is only symptomatic to the real problem, which is a weakening of the body's natural healing system. That there are people seemingly immune to contracting AIDS, cancer, diabetes, yeast infections, epstein-barr, arthritis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and all manner of common ailments verifies the existence of a virile, natural healing system at work.

Treatment Versus Healing...

Modern conventional medicine instills the belief in doctors that health requires outside intervention, while advocates of complementary (alternative or natural) medicine believe that health results from living in harmony with natural law. Compared, the focus of conventional medicine is to identify the external agents of disease and develop weapons against them; while natural medicine is focused on finding ways to increase the potency in the body's natural healing system. Conventional medicine is more interested in treatment, while complementary medicine is more interested in healing. Treatment comes from outside the body, while healing is something that occurs from within. The word, "healing," means to make whole, or for our purposes...to restore balance.

Conventional medicine can diagnose and treat disease, but frequently the patient does not get well. This is because the focus is on treating a symptom rather than on healing the cause of that symptom. In such cases conventional physicians may tell their patients to either go home to die, or to be prepared to live the rest of their lives in a chronic state of illness. That patients have been known to fully recover, in spite of being written off, only mystifies conventional thinking.

Given the two choices, natural complementary medicine offers the best hope for restoring and retaining balance (optimum health), because this is how nature (or God, if you are of spiritual faith) best equipped our bodies to respond. Your body has the miraculous ability to heal itself, and nurturing your natural healing system is what keeps you healthy.

Essential Oils...

Essential oils are among mankind's best hopes to achieve and optimize healing and health. Nature would be askew, out of balance, without them. From a spiritual perspective, it makes complete sense. The reasoning goes that God would not have placed His most beloved creation (man) here on Earth, without providing the means for him to heal his body should he become diseased or ill...And knowing that man would fall ill, that's exactly what God did. He provided man with "medicine" and placed it in the plant kingdom for safe keeping.

Thousands of years before you and I walked upon this earth, fathers and mothers, patriarchs and matriarchs were "anointing" their children and families with oils extracted from plants. The word "anoint" has several connotations, but in context it simply means "to apply." Anointing the head and body with plant oil was a common hygienic practice for our early ancestors. In fact, the knowledge of the healing power in plant oils was so well known, so accepted, references to them in early writings occur frequently as though they needed no explanation (see Mark 6:13).

So cherished for their ability to heal and so desired forhealth, essential oils were at one time considered more precious than gold. Royal households traded slaves, gold and silver, anything of value to possess them. A strong commerce once ensued around them, and men fought over the territory that grew the plants they knew could heal and keep them healthy.

Over the centuries, the knowledge of essential oils was all but lost. When the library at Alexandria in ancient Egypt was burned and destroyed, hundreds of thousands of scrolls containing this knowledge were destroyed with it. Today, we are just now stepping out of the dark ages, in terms of re-discovering just how powerful and important essential oils really are to our health and well-being.

With more and more research underway, we now know thatessential oils are much like the blood of humans, that they arethe transporters of the fundamental nutrients, vital elements and chemical constituents necessary to feed and support life in plants. They have the unique ability to penetrate cell walls to transportoxygen, nutrients and many other vital elements directly to the cell nucleus.

In a manner mystifying to science, essential oils "synergize" with the body's natural healing system, working cooperatively in ways yet unknown. Researchers frequently isolate individualchemicals or "chemotypes" found in plants to formulate a synthetic "medicine." But researchers also acknowledge the effect of synthetic medicine is not the same as when all the many chemotypes present in the plant are allowed to work with the body. This is because the body needs the full compliment of chemotypes within the oils to restore and keep balance.

We know that essential oils are terminators of disease-causing micro-organisms, So deadly, they can kill them by proximity alone (This is due to the oil's volatility). Such notorious characters as staphylococcus, pneumococcus, meningococcus, hemolytic streptococcus, typhus bacillus, diphtheric bacillus, anthrax bacillus, Kock's bacillus, many kinds of mold and a plethora of other pathogenic micro-organisms, are all suseptible to the killing power of specific essential oils.

Perhaps most exciting...There is no known documented evidence of any pathogenic micro-organism (virus and bacterium) developing a resistance to essential oils! That is, No micro-organism has been known to mutate to become immune to the oils. This can only mean one thing...Essential oils are the perfect match to support and nourish our body's natural healing system. They are proving to be the missing link modern man has searched for to bring about healing and vitality.

Disease and ailments will forever be with us. But ours is not a destiny of pain and suffering...Unless we remain ignorant of God's blessing. We are recepients of a wonderful gift...The gift of our creator's medicine chest, essential oils!
